Packing up to move house can be very exciting but it can also be stressful and difficult if you’re not organised so since this is something I’ve been doing recently, I thought I’d share my tips and tricks with you.
Get rid of the clutter
Before you even start packing, go through each room with a couple of bin bags and throw away anything that’s broken, empty or doesn’t get used anymore. If there’s anything you don’t want anymore that you can donate to a charity shop, that’s even better!
Gather everything you’ll need for the next few days
Get together everything from your toothbrush and clothes to your phone charger and keep them in a separate box so that when you first move in, you’ll have all the essentials together without having to riffle through all of your boxes looking for a clean pair of pants.
Take it one step at a time
By this, I mean start with 1 drawer and fully pack that up before moving onto the next one. By doing this, you’ll be able to concentrate on what you’re doing without being overwhelmed by ‘stuff’ everywhere.
Clearly label each box
This kind of goes without saying but PLEASE don’t forget to label your boxes, it’ll make unpacking them so much easier for you! I’m an organisation nerd so i would personally colour code each box as to what room they’re for (eg. pink = bathroom, blue = living room etc.) then list what individual items are in each box on the side but you don’t have to go this far if you don’t want to.
Once you’ve filled a box, take it away
Put it in a different room so it’s not in your way while you’re packing because it’s a lot easier to work in a clear, tidy space.
Clean as you go
On that note, remember to clean everything as you go so you won’t have to go back over it all once you’ve packed. For example, when you empty a drawer clean it with a cloth and spray both inside and out. I would also keep a bin bag nearby for any rubbish you missed when you were getting rid of the clutter.
Keep a notebook on hand
I know that I’m always remembering something that I need to buy, do or fix when I’ve got my hands full and nothing to write it down on so by keeping a notebook or even just a piece of paper and a pen nearby, you’ll be able to write it all down.
If you leave it to the last minute, you’re just going to end up stressed and rushing so don’t put yourself in that situation!
