How to take back control over your life

I’ve been through times when I felt like I had no control over my life, like life was happening to me and I had no say about it, it was horrible. That’s why I worked hard to take back control over my life, so that I wouldn’t feel that way anymore. I’m not in a perfect position now but I’m a LOT happier with the direction of my life so I wanted to share with you some of the techniques I used to get here.

  1. What’s important to you? If your career is important to you then great. If you care more about the relationships you’ve got with your friends/ family that’s awesome! And if you’re not sure then make a list of specific things that matter to you (eg. Keeping a strong connection with my friends, getting a promotion in my job or getting fit & healthy etc.). I made a blog post a while back about the little things that make me happy so that’s something I referred to when I did this.

  1. Get rid of anything that’s holding you back. Whether it be toxic people who drag you down or your job that’s going nowhere (just make sure you find a better job first!). You’ll find it very hard to progress in life if you don’t let go of these things so make the tough decision to let them go!

  1. Give yourself some time to recharge. If you’re planning to make some big life decisions then it’s important to make sure you’re in the right state of mind to do so. I would recommend giving yourself a few days to a week to relax and not worry about anything before you start making moves towards a happier life.

  1. Make a plan to work on anything that’s important to you. If it’s your job that you want to focus on then make an appointment with your boss to see what you should be focusing on to advance your career. Ask if there’s any extra work you could take on or if you can take more responsibility within your role. If you’re wanting to work on your relationships then arrange to spend some quality time with your loved ones over a cup of coffee or a home cooked meal. Once you start spending time on the things that matter to you, you’ll start feeling much happier with your everyday routine.

  1. Surround yourself with supportive people. If you want to get anywhere in life you’ll need a support system no matter who you are so make sure you do the same for your loved ones. If your friend needs to rant about something then invite them over and give them your undivided attention. If your sister wants some help moving house then book a day off to help her. The more time and effort you put into your relationships, the more you’ll get back from them. It’ll make you feel 10x better once you start putting the effort in!

I’m no expert but these are the simple things that have already made a big difference to my life. If there’s anything I can do to help you reach your goals, please let me know I’d love to help!
